What Is It You Are Seeking In God?

There are a lot of churches out there that teach you to look for the different things that God can do for you. They will say that if you pray a certain way, or give a certain amount of money to their ministry that God will give you back all this wealth and status, and different types of physical blessings.

Be careful of gospels who put the focus away from Jesus. These gospels will preach comfort, money, self, and possessions. But the thing is, God isn't this genie that is going to pop out of a lamp, and then grant you all these wishes. If you're coming to God and you're seeking things, seeking what it is that He can do for you, then you're looking in the wrong direction.

We should be seeking Jesus rather than wealth. We should seek spiritual blessings rather than physical blessings. Despite what people may tell you, God doesn't promise us wealth and status, and different things of that sort. Jesus and the apostles, for instance, were by no means rich men. The early church didn't fill their pockets, and they certainly weren't popular among the crowds. Why would we think it would be any different for us? I'm not saying that God won't bless you in this manner, but this isn't the focus that He wants you to have.

When God asked Solomon what it was that he would want for God to grant him, he asked only for the wisdom to run his kingdom. And God was so impressed by this, because Solomon could have asked for anything at all, and he asked for wisdom. God was so impressed, that He granted him more wisdom than anyone ever had before, or would ever have. In addition to this, He also granted to Solomon all the things he didn't ask for. Do you think that Solomon would have received such favor from the Lord, such praise and such a blessing had this been the very thing he was seeking in the first place? No, God was impressed that he didn't ask for more land, riches, and other things. It was... just wisdom.

1 Corinthians tells us to eagerly desire the giftings of the spirit, particularly the greater giftings.

4Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

6And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

8For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

~ 1 Corinthians 12:4-10 (KJV)

Why is it that we are to eagerly desire the gifts of the spirit? Is it so that we can bring attention to ourselves, build ourselves up, or anything like that? No, not at all. This is so that we can have more success when we minister the gospel to others, and in building up the Church.

Seek first the kingdom of God. Don't worry about the material, but focus on the spiritual. God will take care of everything else. You may not get everything it is that you want, but He will provide for you everything that you need.

19Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

20But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

~ Matthew 6:19-21 (KJV)
