Atrocities And Christianity

I've come across a lot of people talking about how their main complaints about Christianity have to do with it's history and it's people. They point out all these bad things that have happened, supposedly in the name of God. And they look at the hypocrisy they see in Christians and in the Church today. In their opinion, they feel this is enough of a reason to stand against whatever Christians stand for. There are all of those throughout history for instance, who committed horrible acts such as the witch burning, the crusades, the inquisition, and some of the more commonly seen instances today such as those who come off as cold and uncaring, certainly not living the things that they're teaching.

You're right. These things seen in history were horrible and should've never happened. People do bad things, and have committed atrocities. Yes, that even includes those who claim to be acting in the name of God. Do I believe these things were righteous in any way? No. Do I believe that God supported such actions? Absolutely not. Does being a Christian equate a person with one who committed such acts? It shouldn't.

Christians are supposed to live in the example of Jesus. I admit there are a lot of people out there who seem to have forgotten this. Like I said, people make mistakes. It's in our nature, and we don't always do the things we should. Even those who come the closest still find themselves stumbling and falling, and then trying to learn and figure out how to do better. This is exactly why we can't rightly point to ourselves and say, Hey, look at us! Look at us! Listen to what we have to say! No, the best we can do is point to the One Who's example we are meant to follow in. Point to the One Who actually DID get things right.

People do make mistakes and will continue to do so. The best thing that we can do is simply to ask Him to forgive us, and then try again, and attempt to live in the example that Jesus set.
